The Fears As Things I’ve Done
Desolation: That time when I was boiling hot dogs on an electric stovetop and somehow lit an oven mitt on fire.
Spiral: That time when I dissociated so hard the buildings around me started to bend and warp, Inception-style.
Buried: That time, one Canadian January, when I wore an Ariel costume into the ocean, got pulled under, and had a moment of calm clarity where I realized that I was going to drown, until my dad grabbed my arm and pulled me out.
Corruption: That time when I was playing a board game at school and a maggot suddenly appeared on the board, at which point I looked around and realized there were maggots everywhere.
Web: That time when I was offered my first ever interview for a new job, only to subsequently realize that it was a pyramid scheme and my job within that scheme would have been to write copy that would manipulate people into participating.
Lonely: That time when I was twelve and I realized that, in theory, I could be the only thinking and feeling human in the world and could be imagining everyone else, and was then surprised when the friend I proposed this hypothesis to was offended by the idea.
Vast: That time when I was on holiday with my family, and we went up to see a ruin on top of a mountain, I looked out over the horizon, and became so convinced that a gust of wind was going to knock me off the side that I started to hyperventilate until my dad took me back down.
Slaughter: That time when I came home in the dark and started walking up the stairs, only for my uncle to jump out snarling like an animal, so I punched him in the stomach hard enough that he collapsed to the ground, and then I stepped calmly past his wheezing body to finish climbing the stairs.
Flesh: That time when I woke up one morning with a pain in my knee, spent all day walking around on it, realized the kneecap was dislocated, and allowed my mom to massage it back into place with one hand while she drove the car.
End: That time when I was born dead was two and suddenly turned to my mom, pointed to the ceiling, and asked, “Who are those people up there?”
Extinction: That time when I was so stressed about an upcoming funeral that I fainted and had a vision of the world in flames and of an army of things that looked human but decidedly weren’t.
Stranger: That time when I was walking through my neighbourhood and saw a young boy sitting high up a tree, with no low branches that he could have used to climb, holding a lacrosse stick, I flinched in surprise, he laughed and, compelled, I laughed along with him, until he suddenly stopped and said, in a voice far too calm and mature for his appearance, “I like scaring people!”
Beholding: That time in high school when my friend was being cagey about details on the swimming coach she had a crush on so, without previously knowing anything about him at all, I calmly and correctly guessed multiple specifics about him (hair colour, eye colour, first name) until she was so freaked out she told me everything.
Dark: That time on Christmas Eve when I wanted a glass of water, so I left my bedroom, only to see a shadowy figure, unlike either of my parents, standing in the dark beside the Christmas tree, and I got the feeling that if I tried to see it more clearly something bad would happen, so I turned back around, closed my door, and went to right back to sleep.
Hunt: That time when I woke up one morning to find a set of four fully healed scars on my back, which looked like clawmarks and which, ten years later, have not faded.
